It is without question that the E-collar has revolutionized the way dogs are trained. However, as with many successful innovations, there are always groups of people who want to criticize or discredit it. The E-collar is no exception. Some individuals demonize thIte tool without fully understanding it or without taking the time to learn about it with an open mind. At the end of the day, the E-collar is simply a tool. Like any tool — whether it’s a pinch collar, choke chain, or slip lead — it can be misused or abused by inexperienced or unethical trainers.
North Tampa Dog Training owner Chris Meverden has been using E-collars for more than 25 years. As an active member of the dog sport community, Chris alongside the dog sport community, has helped pioneer a more humane, effective, and modern approach to E-collar training. Prior to roughly 2010, E-collars were commonly used primarily as punishment tools, and the full capabilities of the technology were not yet understood.
As dog sports evolved, competition rules began rewarding speed, harmony, precision, and enthusiasm in canine performance. Trainers adapted by developing low-level stimulation techniques and pairing E-collar use with positive reinforcement methods. This dramatically changed the way E-collars were used. By applying principles from Ivan Pavlov and classical conditioning, the E-collar became associated with excitement, engagement, and rewards for the dog rather than fear or punishment. Within a few years, obedience performances transformed. Dogs that once appeared flat, slow, and lethargic became energetic, enthusiastic, and confident, consistently working with joyful attitudes and wagging tails. Trainers and handlers experienced a true breakthrough. Instead of using the E-collar solely for correction, it became a communication tool that helped connect behaviors with rewards such as food, praise, or play. These methods eventually carried over into the pet dog training industry, helping shape the modern evolution of dog training around the world through the influence of international dog sports.
As with most things in life, perfection is difficult to achieve. Learning and properly implementing modern E-collar techniques requires significant time, education, and experience. Developing the skill to apply these methods effectively across a wide variety of dogs takes even more dedication and practice. Teaching dogs through this system can also require more patience than older, more traditional training methods.
Unfortunately, human nature can also introduce problems. Some trainers cut corners in order to maximize profits, leading to improper use of the tool and inconsistent results. In addition, educating dog owners and creating a comprehensive handler-training program can be challenging because these methods often differ from the traditional ways people are accustomed to handling their dogs. Explaining the system clearly requires time, thoughtful instruction, and proper demonstrations.
There are also groups within the dog training industry that strongly promote only one philosophy of training. One group is the “positive-only” trainers, who believe dogs should never experience discomfort, correction, or hardship, and that a completely force-free environment will produce harmonious behavior. They actively advocate for their methods and often push for the rest of the dog training community to conform to their ideology.
On the other side are the “old-school” trainers who rely heavily on pinch collars and choke collars and believe, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” Many of these trainers are deeply rooted in traditional methods and believe their techniques are more effective than the newer, evolving approaches to training.
Without question, one of the leading E-collar brands in the industry today is E-Collar Technologies. North Tampa Dog Training uses these collars in the majority of its training programs. Another respected brand is Dogtra, which offers unique features that can be beneficial in specific situations where E Collar Technologies’ system may not be the ideal fit.
If you are located in Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Palm Harbor, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, Trinity, New Port Richey, or Hudson and are looking for your dog to be trained properly with an E-collar, North Tampa Dog Training has been a leader in the Tampa Bay area for modern, balanced dog training methods for over 15 years.
